About Howard

Howard Li (PEng, PhD, IEEE Senior Member) is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. He is a registered professional engineer in the Province of Ontario. Before he joined UNB, he was employed by Atlantis Systems International in the development of training systems for the F/A-18 Hornet fighter aircraft for the Boeing company, Canadian Forces, Royal Australian Air Force, and training systems for Royal Danish Air Force. He developed control software and hardware for unmanned ground vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles, autonomous underwater vehicles, and mobile robots for Defence Research and Development Canada and Applied AI Systems Inc. for both domestic and military applications. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. He received his M.Sc. in Engineering System & Computing from the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada, and B.Eng. in Electrical Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, respectively. He has been doing his research in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of New Brunswick, Canada, the Department of Systems Design Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Waterloo, Canada, and the School of Engineering, University of Guelph, Canada.

His research interests are intelligent vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned ground vehicles, autonomous underwater vehicles, motion planning, Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM), mechatronics, control systems, robotics, multi-agent systems, and artificial intelligence.

His teaching philosophy has developed through his experience as an associate professor at the University of New Brunswick, as a teaching assistant at the University of Guelph, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and the University of Waterloo.

A third facet to his career is his technical experience in industry, which helps him to maintain a balance between the theoretical and the practical. He worked for Atlantis Systems International, ALT Software Inc., Christie Digital Systems, Inc., Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Applied AI Systems, Inc. and so on. He has worked on:

- Integrated Maintenance Training System for F/A-18 Hornet (multi-mission fighter/attack aircraft)
- Mission Computer (AN/AYK 14 Navy Standard Airborne Computer)
- Multi-Purpose Display Group
- AN/ALE-47 Countermeasures Dispenser System and the Electronic Warfare System
- Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) - includes TACAN and Data Link communication and targeting systems
- Left/Right DDIs, the Horizontal Signal Indicator and the Situation Awareness (SA)
- Upfront control system
- Hydraulic system, the landing gear/emergency brake system, and the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)
- Memory Unit (MU)
- RADAR format and waypoints
- Head-Up Display (HUD)
- EH-101 helicopter for Royal Danish Air Force

The University of New Brunswick (UNB) is a Canadian university located in the province of New Brunswick. The university has two main campuses: the principal campus founded in 1785 in Fredericton and a smaller campus which was opened in Saint John in 1964. UNB is the oldest English language university in Canada and was the first public university in North America. UNB offers over 60 degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels with a total student enrollment of approximately 12,000 between the two principal campuses.

In 1854, the University of New Brunswick was the birthplace of engineering education in Canada. Today, UNB's Faculty of Engineering in Fredericton is ranked among the top 20 percent of engineering schools in North America and is known nationally and internationally for its applied science programs. Rapidly evolving and new emerging technologies have fostered a strong interdisciplinary culture among the Faculty's seven major fields of study. There are 320 undergraduate students, 90 graduate students and 20 faculty members in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The department offers degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Software Engineering (in collaboration with the Faculty of Computer Science). The department is an active participant in both a Co-op and a professional experience program which places students across Canada.
